I have created this map of the Karst sinkholes in Florida using ESRI ArcGIS 9.3. The sinkhole GIS data (depicted as yellow double-circles) is somewhat dated, and was downloaded from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection webpage about the Florida Geological Survey, Subsidence Incident Reports. The webpage a that link will prompt your for a valid email address, before you can download any GIS data about Karst Sinkholes, which they refer to as subsidence incidents.

The subject sinkhole of this webpage, the Padfield property, in Windermere, was geographically created from a variety of sources, the local news for the description of the incident, the Orange County Assessor's Office online for determining which parcel is the sinkhole property, and Google Earth, to obtain the latitude and longitude of the sinkhole location. This data was then entered into a new ESRI shapefile that I specifically created to match the State's sinkhole shapefile, and brought into this map.

In January, 2011, Senate Bill 408, also known as SB 408, was signed into law. This law seems to impact the residents of Pasco and Hernando Counties, the hardest. If you have property in the areas of Florida that are susceptable to sinkholes, then you should review your Florida insurance policies and the Florida Sinkhole legislation, then contact your insurance agent for sinkhole coverage, or a sinkhole attorney.

Sinkhole Insurance: Who Needs it and What Does it Cover?
Before you can get sinkhole insurance, the company will likely order a geological survey of your property. The insurance provider does this to make sure there is no obvious risk of a sinkhole collapse. The customer is usually responsible for the cost of the survey. About this Webpage

I enjoy working with GIS data and try to find new things to keep my skills honed with.

Within these pages, I am performing some GIS tasks about the Karst Sinkholes in Florida. After seeing the news about the 100 foot-side sinkhole that had opened up behind a house in Windermere, Florida, I decided to see what was available for historic sinkhole data and started developing this webpage, complete with a time-lapse video of the historic locations of the sinkholes.
