Before Petra: Ancient Civilizations Were Already Carving Mountains
Petra can look like the invention of a civilization that suddenly discovered an extraordinary new idea: instead of constructing a monumental building from stone, carve the architecture directly into the stone itself.
But Petra was not the beginning.
By the time Nabataean craftsmen were creating the great façades of Petra and Hegra, people elsewhere had already been carving temples, tombs and architectural façades into living rock for centuries.
In Egypt, that tradition reached monumental scale more than a thousand years before Petra's celebrated period. Persian kings later placed enormous royal tomb façades high in cliffs. In ancient Lycia, in what is now southwestern Turkey, builders carved tombs whose façades deliberately resembled constructed architecture.
These earlier monuments do not prove a simple chain in which one civilization copied another. What they do establish is more important:
the Nabataeans inherited an ancient world in which carving architecture from mountains was already a well-established idea.

More Than a Thousand Years Before Petra
Abu Simbel immediately pushes our timeline far backward.
The two great rock-cut temples were created for the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari during Egypt's New Kingdom.
Instead of constructing a conventional freestanding temple, Egyptian workers excavated monumental façades, entrances and interior spaces directly into sandstone.
The Great Temple presents four colossal seated figures of Ramesses II across its façade. Behind them, chambers extend deep into the rock.
Conceptually, this differs from many of Petra's great tombs, where an elaborate architectural façade often dominates a comparatively simpler interior.
But Abu Simbel demonstrates beyond doubt that ancient builders possessed the organizational ability, tools, surveying skills and ambition required to create monumental architecture by excavation long before the Nabataeans.

And Then the Mountain Was Moved
Abu Simbel contains an extraordinary modern chapter that makes the ancient engineering even more fascinating.
Construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened the Nubian monuments with inundation. An international campaign coordinated through UNESCO rescued numerous monuments during the 1960s and 1970s.
Abu Simbel's temples were cut into large sections, relocated and reconstructed approximately 60 meters above their original site.
Modern engineers therefore performed almost the reverse of the ancient operation: architecture originally created from a mountain had to be carefully separated from that mountain and recreated within a new artificial setting.

Then Persia Put Royal Tombs High in the Cliff
Several centuries after Abu Simbel—but still centuries before Petra reached its monumental peak—another striking form of rock-cut architecture appeared in the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
At Naqsh-e Rostam in present-day Iran, four enormous Achaemenid royal tomb façades are cut high into a nearly vertical cliff.
The site lies only a few kilometers northwest of Persepolis. Encyclopaedia Iranica identifies it as an exceptionally rich archaeological site containing four Achaemenid royal tombs as well as later Sasanian reliefs.
The tomb associated securely with Darius I established a characteristic cruciform form that was repeated for later Achaemenid rulers.
Here the conceptual resemblance to Petra becomes particularly interesting:
a monumental architectural statement is carved into a cliff, while the burial space lies behind it.

Darius Established a Royal Rock-Tomb Pattern
The identification of the tomb of Darius I is particularly important because inscriptions connect the monument directly with the king.
The façade takes the form of a huge cross cut into the cliff. Architectural and sculptural elements communicate royal power on a scale far larger than the burial chamber itself.
Later Achaemenid royal tombs repeated the basic form.
Encyclopaedia Iranica describes Darius as creating the characteristic Achaemenid rock-tomb type at Naqsh-e Rostam, a form subsequently used by his successors.
That makes Naqsh-e Rostam especially important for our Petra comparison. Long before the Nabataeans, monumental funerary architecture had already transformed a sheer cliff into a political and architectural display.

Lycia Brings the Comparison Even Closer
In southwestern Anatolia, the ancient Lycians developed a distinctive funerary tradition that included tombs cut directly into cliffs.
Some appear remarkably architectural. Rather than presenting only a doorway into a burial chamber, their façades reproduce features that make the rock look as though a constructed building has been inserted into the cliff.
At Xanthos, the ancient Lycian capital, UNESCO describes rock-cut tombs, pillar tombs and pillar-mounted sarcophagi as unique examples of ancient funerary architecture.
UNESCO also emphasizes the blending of native Lycian traditions with Hellenic influence, particularly in funerary art.
That combination deserves our attention because Petra would later emerge within another cultural environment in which indigenous traditions met the architectural vocabulary of the Hellenistic world.
The Cliff Begins to Look Like a Building
The Lycian examples introduce a concept especially relevant to Petra.
A rock-cut tomb does not have to look like a simple cave entrance. Its exterior can imitate architecture that could otherwise have been constructed from timber or masonry.
Doorways, projecting elements, framed openings, columns and other architectural details can be rendered entirely in stone even when they no longer perform the structural jobs those forms originally performed in conventional buildings.
Once that idea exists, a cliff is no longer merely something into which a chamber can be excavated.
The cliff itself becomes an architectural façade.
That is one of the conceptual steps that makes Petra easier to place within the longer history of rock-cut architecture.
Then the Hellenistic World Changed the Architectural Vocabulary
The conquests of Alexander the Great in the late fourth century BC transformed the political and cultural geography of the eastern Mediterranean and Near East.
In the centuries that followed, Greek architectural forms became increasingly familiar across a vast region.
Columns, capitals, pediments, entablatures and other classical elements became part of an architectural vocabulary that could be adapted by local cultures rather than merely copied.
This matters when looking at Petra.
The Nabataeans did not abandon their own traditions and start building Greek monuments. Instead, they combined imported architectural ideas with indigenous rock-cut forms and other eastern influences.
UNESCO describes Petra precisely in terms of that fusion: Hellenistic architectural façades combined with traditional Nabataean rock-cut temples and tombs.

Putting the Predecessors in Order

Did Petra Copy These Earlier Monuments?
This is where the comparison requires caution.
Seeing an Egyptian temple, Persian cliff tomb or Lycian rock façade that predates Petra does not by itself establish a direct line of architectural descent.
We should distinguish several different possibilities:
- an earlier monument may simply demonstrate that a technique already existed;
- two cultures may participate in a broader architectural tradition without one directly copying the other;
- ideas may move indirectly through craftsmen, trade, conquest or neighboring cultures;
- similar architectural solutions can occasionally develop independently.
For Petra, the strongest argument is therefore not:
"The Nabataeans saw this monument and copied it."
A more defensible conclusion is:
Petra emerged within a region where monumental funerary architecture, rock excavation and increasingly international architectural styles already had long histories.

Petra Was Still Something New
Finding older precedents does not diminish Petra.
In fact, it makes the Nabataean achievement more interesting.
The Nabataeans inherited access to an ancient architectural world containing Egyptian monumentality, Persian royal traditions, Anatolian funerary architecture and increasingly widespread Hellenistic forms.
At Petra, those influences encountered local sandstone, Nabataean religious and funerary traditions, caravan wealth and a culture accustomed to communicating across great distances.
The result was not Egyptian, Persian, Lycian or Greek.
It became Nabataean.
Now Look at the Map
Once these sites are placed in chronological order, another question becomes difficult to ignore.
Egypt, Anatolia, Persia, Petra and Arabia were not sealed cultural islands.
Roads, caravan corridors, maritime routes, imperial systems and pilgrimage networks connected much of the ancient world.
If merchandise could travel those routes, so could craftsmen, technologies, artistic fashions and architectural ideas.
That does not prove that every similar monument is related. But it gives us a mechanism by which genuine influence could occur.
