Petra: A City Carved at the Crossroads of the Ancient World

Cappadocia: When an Entire Landscape Became Architecture

Petra gives us monumental tomb façades.

Ajanta and Ellora give us monasteries, sanctuaries and temples excavated from rock.

Cappadocia changes the scale of the question again.

Here, people carved not only monuments but also churches, dwellings, storage spaces, monastic cells and underground settlements into a landscape shaped by volcanic rock and erosion.

UNESCO describes the Göreme region as containing an exceptional concentration of rock-hewn cells, churches, troglodyte villages and subterranean cities.

The architecture is no longer just something placed within the landscape. The landscape itself becomes usable space.

Geology Made the Architecture Possible

Cappadocia's unusual appearance begins with geology rather than architecture.

Volcanic activity deposited large quantities of relatively soft material across the region. Erosion later sculpted that material into valleys, cones, pillars and formations commonly known today as fairy chimneys.

The same properties that allowed erosion to shape the landscape also made portions of the rock workable enough for people to excavate.

Instead of transporting enormous quantities of construction material to a site, inhabitants could create usable space by removing material already present.

Churches Inside the Rock

Cappadocia became especially important as a center of Christian religious life.

Göreme contains numerous rock-cut churches and chapels, including examples decorated with Byzantine wall paintings. UNESCO identifies the region's rock-hewn sanctuaries as important evidence for Byzantine art, particularly in the post-Iconoclastic period.

The Turkish Ministry of Culture describes Göreme Open Air Museum as a rock settlement that hosted intensive monastic life from the 4th through the 13th centuries.

Churches, chapels, refectories and living spaces were excavated into the rock formations.

Once again, the interior architecture is not merely a hollowed cavity. Rooms were deliberately organized for religious and communal use.

Not Every Carved Room Was Monumental

This is what makes Cappadocia especially useful in our series.

Rock excavation was not restricted to royal burial or impressive religious monuments.

People could excavate spaces for ordinary functions as well: living, storage, food preparation, animals and communal activity.

UNESCO's description of the region specifically includes dwellings, troglodyte villages and subterranean towns as part of the traditional human habitat.

That broadens our understanding of rock-cut architecture.

Sometimes excavation was not an extraordinary architectural statement. It was simply a practical way to make useful space.

Then the Architecture Goes Underground

Cappadocia's underground cities push the idea in another direction.

At Derinkuyu, excavated spaces extend deep below the surface. Türkiye's official museum information gives an approximate depth of 85 meters and identifies spaces including stables, cellars, dining halls and churches, all connected through galleries and tunnels.

The result is not a conventional city buried by later deposits.

Much of the usable environment itself was intentionally excavated underground.

That makes Derinkuyu fundamentally different from Petra's monumental façades while still belonging to the broader story of architecture made by removing natural material.

Why Create So Much Space Underground?

A single explanation is tempting, particularly defense.

Concealed entrances, narrow passages and underground spaces could certainly provide protection in periods of danger.

But subterranean construction also offered practical environmental advantages. Türkiye's official description of Derinkuyu notes that underground spaces remain cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Storage, shelter, climate control, defense and religious life could therefore all contribute to the usefulness of excavated spaces.

This is another reason not to force every rock-cut site into a single explanation.

The same basic construction technique can answer very different human needs.

Excavating a Room Is Only the Beginning

Once an underground settlement becomes extensive, engineering problems multiply.

People require access between levels. Air must circulate. Food and supplies need storage. Animals require appropriate spaces. Entrances may need to be controlled or concealed.

Cappadocia's underground complexes therefore demonstrate more than an ability to hollow out soft rock.

They represent planned networks of usable spaces connected through passages and vertical relationships.

A photograph of one tunnel can make the site look like a cave. The larger architectural achievement becomes apparent only when the spaces are understood as parts of a system.

Cappadocia Is Mostly Later Than Petra

The landscape itself is ancient, and people occupied Cappadocia long before its famous Byzantine rock churches were created.

But the rock-cut Christian landscape most visitors associate with Göreme belongs principally to the centuries after Petra's Nabataean peak.

Approximate Period Development
Before the Christian period Cappadocia had a much longer history of settlement within central Anatolia.
From about the 4th century AD UNESCO identifies surviving traditional rock-cut habitation in the region from this broad period.
4th–13th centuries AD Göreme becomes an important center of monastic and Christian rock-cut activity.
Byzantine period Numerous rock-hewn churches receive painted religious decoration.

This means a Byzantine church in Cappadocia may look as though it belongs to the same mysterious ancient world as Petra while actually being many centuries younger.

The comparison reveals why "rock-cut architecture" is more useful than treating all of these places as one architectural style.

The technique is shared. The architectural purpose may be completely different.

Where Does the Natural Formation End and the Building Begin?

Cappadocia creates an architectural ambiguity that Petra and Kailasa generally do not.

A fairy chimney's exterior may be largely the product of natural erosion.

Its doors, rooms and internal passages may be entirely human creations.

The finished object is therefore partly geological formation and partly architecture.

This makes Cappadocia an unusually clear demonstration that humans do not always have to replace a landscape to inhabit it.

Sometimes architecture can be created by modifying the landscape from within.

Then Ethiopia Gives Us Another Surprise

Cappadocia shows how natural rock formations can become churches and communities.

Our next site returns to monumental religious architecture, but with another dramatic change in technique.

At Lalibela in Ethiopia, churches were cut downward into volcanic rock so that some structures appear to stand independently below the original ground surface.

They look extraordinarily ancient.

Yet they belong primarily to the medieval world.

Petra was already more than a thousand years old when Lalibela's famous churches were being created.
