Petra: A City Carved at the Crossroads of the Ancient World

Coincidence or Connection? Why Rock-Cut Buildings Look Alike

We began this journey with a deceptively simple question.

Why do structures carved into cliffs and mountains in different parts of the ancient world sometimes look as though they belong to the same architectural story?

Petra in Jordan provides the obvious starting point. Its monumental façades seem almost impossibly precise for buildings carved directly from natural sandstone.

But then similar questions appear elsewhere.

Hegra in Saudi Arabia contains unmistakably Nabataean rock-cut tombs. Persian kings were buried behind monumental façades cut high into cliffs. Lycian builders carved tombs that imitate constructed buildings. Indian craftsmen excavated monasteries and temples from mountains. Cappadocians turned volcanic formations into churches, dwellings and underground settlements. Ethiopian builders carved entire medieval churches downward into the bedrock at Lalibela.

Put photographs of these places together and the temptation is irresistible:

Surely they must somehow be connected.

Sometimes they are.

Sometimes a connection is possible but difficult to prove.

And sometimes two civilizations may simply have discovered that carving architecture from existing rock solves similar problems in similar ways.

Our Eyes Notice Similarity Before History Does

This is where casual observation can lead to a genuinely interesting historical question.

We notice columns, pediments, doorways and monumental façades.

Most importantly, we notice that architecture which appears constructed has actually been carved from natural rock.

But visual similarity is only the beginning of an investigation.

Before proposing a connection, we need to ask when the monuments were made, who created them, what purpose they served and whether meaningful contact between the cultures was possible.

Once we do that, the apparent similarities begin separating into several very different categories.

Not Every "Connection" Means the Same Thing

Rather than forcing every site into a yes-or-no answer, it is more useful to think about several levels of possible relationship.

The distinction matters because the word connection can otherwise imply much more evidence than actually exists.

Petra and Hegra: The Connection We Don't Have to Guess About

Petra and Hegra provide our strongest comparison because their relationship is not based merely upon appearance.

Both were major places within the Nabataean world.

Both contain monumental rock-cut tomb architecture.

Their periods of use overlap.

Nabataean inscriptions and archaeological evidence provide cultural context that photographs alone cannot.

UNESCO describes Hegra as the largest conserved Nabataean site south of Petra and notes its monumental tombs with decorated façades.

Here we do not need to invent a mysterious lost connection.

The connection is the Nabataean civilization itself.

Ancient Architecture Was Never Sealed Behind Modern Borders

Modern maps can mislead us.

Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, Iran and India appear as separate countries divided by clearly drawn boundaries.

Ancient people did not inhabit that political map.

Empires expanded across regions. Merchants crossed cultural boundaries. Ports connected distant coasts. Armies moved. Craftsmen traveled. Pilgrims traveled. Diplomatic contacts brought elites into contact with foreign artistic traditions.

Architectural vocabulary could therefore move without an entire civilization moving with it.

A column type could be borrowed. A decorative motif could be adapted. A tomb façade could combine local traditions with architectural forms encountered elsewhere.

Petra itself is particularly interesting because Nabataean architecture developed within a world exposed to Hellenistic, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern traditions.

Cultural exchange does not necessarily produce copies. It often produces hybrids.

Routes create possibilities: caravan, maritime and imperial networks allowed people and ideas to move across enormous distances.

Trade Routes Tell Us What Was Possible—not Necessarily What Happened

Our trade-route comparison revealed something important.

Many of these regions were not nearly as isolated as their geographic separation might suggest.

Arabia connected with Mediterranean markets.

Persian imperial communication crossed enormous territories.

Red Sea and Indian Ocean commerce connected Egypt and Arabia with India.

These networks make the transmission of ideas plausible.

But a route on a map cannot tell us that an architect traveled along it carrying a particular design.

A trade route establishes opportunity for contact, not proof of architectural transmission.

The Simplest Test: Which One Came First?

Before proposing that one monument influenced another, chronology provides an obvious test.

A building cannot normally influence another building that was created centuries earlier.

Our examples span an enormous period of time.

The timeline alone eliminates some simplistic theories.

Abu Simbel cannot have copied Petra.

Persia's Achaemenid royal tombs predate the great Nabataean façades.

India's rock-cut tradition was already developing around the broad period in which Nabataean architecture flourished.

Cappadocia and Lalibela, meanwhile, demonstrate that monumental rock-cut architecture continued long after Petra's great period.

Sometimes the Rock Itself Suggests the Solution

Suppose two societies have no direct contact at all.

Both nevertheless occupy landscapes containing rock suitable for excavation.

Both need protected interior spaces.

Both understand stoneworking.

Is it surprising that both might discover that rooms can be created by cutting into the rock?

Probably not.

Once excavation begins, additional similarities may emerge naturally.

Doorways need openings. Large ceilings may require supporting masses that resemble columns. Religious buildings may reproduce familiar forms from conventional architecture.

Similar constraints can produce similar architectural solutions without direct cultural contact.

Architecture by subtraction: once a civilization chooses excavation rather than construction, some architectural similarities can arise from the technique itself.

Sometimes the Similarity Began Before Anyone Carved the Cliff

Another pattern appeared repeatedly during our journey.

Rock-cut architecture can imitate buildings originally constructed from other materials.

Lycian tomb façades can reproduce forms associated with timber architecture.

Indian rock-cut halls preserve architectural forms associated with constructed buildings.

Monumental façades at Petra use columns, pediments and other architectural elements familiar from the broader ancient Mediterranean world.

This creates an important possibility.

Two rock-cut monuments do not necessarily resemble one another because one copied the other.

Both may be translating conventional constructed architecture into stone.

The architectural resemblance can therefore originate in an older shared vocabulary of buildings rather than in the act of carving rock itself.

Kailasa and Lalibela: separated by culture, religion, geography and centuries, yet both demonstrate the extraordinary possibilities of subtractive architecture.

The Most Fascinating Similarity May Not Require a Connection

India's Kailasa Temple and Ethiopia's churches at Lalibela provide perhaps the most visually provocative comparison in this series.

In both places, builders could create monumental structures by excavating around selected masses of natural rock.

Yet the monuments belong to different religious traditions, different regions and different periods.

Kailasa belongs to 8th-century India.

Lalibela's celebrated complex belongs principally to the medieval Ethiopian world several centuries later.

We do not need a lost civilization connecting them to appreciate the similarity.

In fact, independent development may make the comparison more interesting.

Human beings confronted with stone discovered more than once that architecture could be created by subtraction rather than addition.

What Would We Need Before Claiming One Site Influenced Another?

A convincing argument becomes stronger when several independent kinds of evidence point in the same direction.

Evidence Question to Ask
Chronology Did the proposed source actually exist before the supposedly influenced monument?
Geography Were the cultures within realistic reach of one another?
Trade and travel Were there routes capable of moving people and ideas?
Intermediate examples Can related architectural forms be traced between the two regions?
Inscriptions or texts Is there documentary evidence of cultural contact?
Archaeological evidence Do objects, materials or techniques demonstrate interaction?
Specific architectural details Are the similarities distinctive enough that coincidence becomes unlikely?

A photograph can inspire the question.

Evidence has to answer it.

We Don't Need a Lost Global Civilization to Explain the Similarities

Monumental ancient architecture naturally attracts extraordinary explanations.

When similar-looking monuments appear thousands of kilometers apart, theories involving vanished global civilizations or unknown ancient technologies can seem appealing.

But the archaeological record already gives us something more interesting.

Ancient societies were capable of remarkable engineering.

They were also far more connected than a modern political map might lead us to assume.

Architectural ideas could travel through documented cultural networks.

And human beings in completely different places could independently discover similar solutions to similar physical problems.

None of that makes the monuments less extraordinary.

It makes the people who actually created them more extraordinary.

So—Were They Connected?

There isn't one answer because there isn't one relationship.

Petra and Hegra? Yes. Their connection is strong and direct within the Nabataean world.

Petra and the wider Mediterranean and Near Eastern architectural world? Cultural exchange and architectural borrowing are well within the historical setting in which Nabataean architecture developed.

Persia, Anatolia and later Nabataean architecture? Earlier rock-cut traditions provide important comparisons and existed within regions capable of cultural contact, but individual lines of architectural influence require specific evidence.

Petra and India? Long-distance trade demonstrates that Arabia and India were not isolated worlds, but India's rock-cut tradition has its own early history and cannot simply be treated as an extension of Petra.

Petra and Cappadocia? Their rock-cut architecture belongs largely to different historical contexts and serves very different purposes.

Kailasa and Lalibela? Their subtractive construction makes for a remarkable comparison, but similarity of technique does not require direct historical influence.

The larger answer is therefore more satisfying than a simple yes or no.

Some of these places were connected. Some may reflect broader currents of cultural exchange. Others show that human ingenuity can independently rediscover the same powerful idea.

One Idea, Many Worlds

There is a wonderfully simple principle behind every monument in this series.

Ordinary construction begins with empty space.

Material is brought into that space and assembled until architecture exists.

Rock-cut architecture begins with the opposite problem.

The material is already there.

There is too much of it.

The architect's task is to decide what should disappear.

Across different continents, religions and thousands of years, people repeatedly discovered the architectural possibilities hidden inside that simple reversal.

Sometimes the most remarkable way to build something is not to build it at all—but to uncover it from the stone that was already there.
